Review: Outbreak

Hello, y’all! Hope this post finds you well. I’ve been trying to keep up with the blog while writing and reading like a mad person.

Recently, I came across a new series, The Brother’s Creed by Joshua C. Chadd. The author and his works are new to me, so like any avid reader, I dove into book one, Outbreak.

The author is a self-proclaimed adventurous nerd, extraordinaire!  Who had me at ZOMBIES!

According to an editorial review by Norma Hinkens, NYT & USA Today bestselling author of the Underground Series, Outbreak is “Definitely a page turner and easy to get invested in the characters. For fans of Zombie thrillers, Apocalypse fiction, and The Walking Dead. The author doesn’t downplay the hardcore reality of living in the post-apocalyptic times but also doesn’t glamorize the gore. He paints realistic scenarios and delivers satisfying, if not always happy, outcomes to terrible situations. There’s an element of hope woven throughout that makes you ponder deeper questions. Well-written, well-researched and well-edited. I wished the story had been longer!”

Here is the book description:

“How far would you go to save the ones you love?

Two brothers learn of the apocalypse after being out of touch for a few days. Returning to town, they learn first-hand, the dead are coming back to life with a taste for flesh. With their parents in Nebraska, they must embark on a journey to rescue them as they set into motion their zombie apocalypse plan. But they’ll see not all is fun and games as they realize it is nothing like they imagined it would be.

Can they make it in time to save their parents from a fate worse than death?

Emmett Wolfe has been preparing for this day for years, but still, cannot believe it is happening. An infection unlike any other has begun to spread across America and the world as he knows it is coming to an end. He must rescue his daughter and ex-wife and transport them to a safe location.

But at the end of the world, nowhere is safe anymore…”

A couple of things you should know about my review process, I don’t like giving away spoilers. I’ll tell you if and why I liked or disliked a book, whether I recommend this, and my overall impression of the story and writing.

Now let’s dive in!

Joshua C. Chadd captivated my attention right from the start with an exciting, suspenseful, action-packed, fast-paced, easy to read story.

I COULDN’T PUT IT DOWN!

The author has done an amazing job in taking a Zombie Apocalypse and making it his own. Trust me, this book has something for everyone.

The characters are likable and believable. Albeit, there are some “things” that made me go hmm…just had to remember this is fantasy, and anything goes.

What I appreciated the most was the author’s ability to create this story and keep the gore to a minimum. Thank you! Gore is always a HUGE turnoff for me.

There is a very prevalent foundation of Christianity, but, I feel the author did a good job at incorporating this into the story, without coming across as an overzealous Jesus nut. However, when it comes to the weaponry, he goes above an beyond to strut his “stuff,” in other words, knowledge. Which I appreciated, but, could’ve done without the vast amount of detail. Still, it worked.

Overall, Outbreak is good enough for me to add the remainder in the series to my ‘to be read’ file.

Final verdict? Buy it! Read it! Yes, I recommend this to YA and above.

BONUS INFO:

I reached out to the author, and he’s extended an invitation for you, the reader, to join his Kickass Readers Guild on Facebook.

Here’s his comment:

“I’ve teamed up with a good friend and author, R.J. Batla, to bring you something different and fun. Like most Indie authors, nowadays, we’re having to create a Facebook group because they’re making it increasingly difficult for our posts to be seen. Like all those kinds of groups, this is a way for you to be more involved in the writing process, help us create ideas, pick cover art, have giveaways, contests, and more.

BUT unlike other author groups, we’re doing something a little different. We’re running it like a guild (hence the name) in that we’ve created a ranking system. The more involved you are in the group and by reading our books, you can rank up and gain rewards exclusive to KARG (Kickass Readers Guild).

This guild is a way for you to connect with us, fellow readers, and even other authors. It’s not mine & RJ’s guild, it’s yours!

I’ve said enough if you want to know more just click the Guilds’ image below to check it out and see for yourself!”
